Environment
Mama Bear as a product does not have much to say for itself in terms of sustainability. But if you look at their parent company Amazon, there are serious moves being made in this arena. The company has said they are on track to have net zero emissions by 2025. They are committed to conserving and reusing water, both in their on-site operations and by working with private and public entities to support water availability in communities where they operate data centers. They have even co-founded "The Climate Pledge", a commitment to reach net-zero carbon by 2040 - 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement. Mama Bear as an individual brand however, does not have "The Climate Pledge" commitment identified, and we know almost nothing about how it is manufactured except that their Gentle Touch Diapers are manufactured in a zero waste to landfill facility. Mama Bear receives an B for the Environmental Pillar of The Conscious Score, but only because of their parent company, Amazon.
Human Rights
Amazon is committed to respecting and supporting the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the core Conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO), and the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work. This means that they ensure they do not participate (and neither do their partners) in forced labor, discrimination, and they enforce fairness and equality in the workplace. Because these standards are across the entire supply chain and their products under the Amazon umbrella, Mama Bear receives an A for the Human Rights pillar of The Conscious Score, but only because of their parent company Amazon.
Animal Rights
Mama Bear claims that their products are cruelty free, but they do not have a certification. We also do not know if they have vegan ingredients or if they sell in countries that require animal testing. Since Mama Bear is not certified vegan or cruelty free and it is ambiguous if they are sold in countries that require testing they get an F for the Animal Rights Pillar of The Conscious Score.
Performance
Overview
We evaluate performance of the baby diapers based on real parent feedback and 3rd party lab tests. We consider things like absorbency, durability, scent, leak protection and softness. Mama Bear receives a B overall for the Performance Pillar of The Conscious Score.
Gentle Touch Diapers
Gentle Touch Diapers scored an average 4.3 out of 5 from over 42,833 parents. Based on 3rd party testing, the diaper offers better than average absorbance especially considering its price point. Additionally, the diaper performed well in durability with no faulty tab experiences and parents mentioned they saw the same results. Mama Bear Diapers receive a B for the Performance Pillar of The Conscious Score.
Plush Protection Diapers
Plush Protection Diapers scored an average 4.1 out of 5 from 1074 parents. From this feedback, we found that absorbency was good despite the diapers being thinner than the Gentle Touch Diapers. Feedback was mixed on the leak protection, but overall it was positive. Parents told us that Plush protection diapers were comfortable with minimal negative feedback. Mama Bear Plus Protection Diapers receive a B for the Performance Pillar of The Conscious Score.
